Woodstock's Hawthorn Gallery: Antiques & Curiosities From India, China, Burma

NY: On the approach into Woodstock, New York, it would be easy to overlook the sign pointing you towards the Hawthorn Gallery and Red Barn Antiques. But don't make that mistake -- this is one place you won't want to miss.

Tucked in next to the gas station-turned-Sovreign Bank is
Elwyn Lane. Follow this road around the bend and through a residential area and all the sudden in a clearing to your right, the red barn that houses The Hawthorn Gallery beckons. On first approach, what immediately catches the eye, beyond the striking red building, are the intricately carved wooden and stone architectural fragments that lean against walls, nestle into ground covering and rise mystically from overgrown flower beds.

And that is just the beginning of the treasures to be found
in this unique place.

Created by the husband and wife team of Peter and Phyllis Guinan over 25 years ago, the Hawthorn Gallery (named for the two Hawthorn trees out front) specializes in antiques and curiosities from India and China and original artwork from Burma. The Guinans, who resided in India for a number of years before making Woodstock home, are true authorities on the lineage of both the antique furnishings as well as the charming home accessories that fill the first two floors of the barn.  The intricately carved, compartmentalized boxes that fill one table? They were used to hold spices and makeup in India (perfect jewelry boxes, shown below). The multicolored slender cylinders arranged in a set of copper containers? Miniature rolling pins (and the copper vessels housing the pins are measuring accoutrements, shown in photo at bottom on left)? And charming handled wooden items that Phyllis affectionately calls "the Guccis" because of their resemblance to handbags? Containers used to hold oil.

Larger items include window frames and doors refashioned into cocktail and side tables (shown above), beautiful antique armoires (below left), modern day handpainted chests and amazing architectural artifacts (below right) that would add creative design to any home environment.
