Labor Day Washout?

Ken, Alex and I had the best intentions of showing the summer out with a bang and making great use of our Labor Day weekend. A visit to the Hell's Kitchen flea market and Chinatown on Saturday, the Frenchtown Riverfest on Sunday and a pool party thrown in for good measure. Are the anticipated arrival of showers, compliments of Hurricane Ernesto, going to dampen our spirits and plans?

The plans, likely yes. Our spirits, I doubt it. Instead of trying to cram in more activities than any sane person should do (my specialty), even when the weather is picture perfect, it is likely that instead we will be putting our time to better, less frenzied use.

In my case, that could mean organizing the messy-for-too-long closet and garage. Or perhaps tackling the refurbishment of the exquisite cottage door -- completed with leaded glass window and vintage door knocker -- that I nabbed from the trash heap of a nearby renovation (although I have to say, slapping vinyl siding and a new, characterless door on a quaint '20s Tudor are not my idea of worthwhile improvements). I can see it already as either a too-cool bedroom headboard or charm-loaded garden gate.

Most likely, we will schedule in some much-needed together, down time. The video store in town closed recently and we purchased movies of every conceivable genre, now piled high in a corner of the den. I am thinking this may be the perfect weekend for our first ever "Waterlogged Film Festival." We also may recreate some of the recipes in the cookbook that Alex brought back from his recent Alaskan travels.

But whatever we do, natch, we will be creating memories. I would hardly call that a "wash out."
