Smaller Communities = Better Neighbors

In a recent study released by a University of California Irvine professor and reported in the LA Times, an interesting parallel was discovered between the density and friendliness of a community.

In reviewing responses from 15,000 survey participants, economics professor Jan Brueckner  discovered that one of the advantages of suburban living over city dwelling is enhanced social interaction.

Specifically, Brueckner's findings concluded that for every ten percentage point drop in the density of the population, there is a ten percent increase in the likelihood you will speak with a neighbor at least once a week. Reasons for this "Love Thy Neighbor" attitude? In areas with greater density, fear of crime, more entertainment options and wariness due to close proximity are just some of the factors that result in LESS interaction.

All of which reinforces the anecdotal perception that small towns really are friendlier.
